WINDSOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

COMMUNITY SERVICE
PROJECT
Dear Parents:
The eighth grade is again presenting its service project unit. We are especially proud of this unique program which was started in Windsor in 1982 as part of our Social Science curriculum. A year after its inception, the prestigious Carnegie Report recommended that all secondary students be required to participate in community service as part of their education.
The goal of our project is to actively involve our students in their community. Seeing that they can be effective participants in a democratic society helps them to mature, and they realize that they can and do make a difference to themselves and to their community.
As part of our program each student is required to plan and carry out at least five hours of voluntary service. Step-by-step along the way, the student will receive feedback and guidance from their teacher, you, their parents, and their community. In this manner the program has seen approximately 3500 students receive success and recognition in helping their peers, community, and local non-profit institutions.
Many of our students have worked in rest homes, hospitals, and pre-schools. They have seen where they can make a difference. Others have designed their own projects that have had a positive effect upon our school and our community: projects such as tree plantings, tutoring, and coaching.
As it is part of their regular course work, the students will receive a grade on their projects. They will be required to write a report and do a follow-up oral presentation to their peers.
We hope that you share our excitement and enthusiasm for this unique opportunity for the eighth grade students, and that you will support them with directions and guidance in planning their personal projects.
If you have questions or suggestions regarding this or any other school program, please call the school office. We encourage you to become involved with this wonderful program.
Sincerely,

WINDSOR MIDDLE SCHOOL
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
CONTRACT
______________________________of Windsor Middle School is involved in a community service project in his/her Social Science class. Each student is required to plan, execute, and report on a five-hour project that they volunteer to do for community service. It is very important for you to know that they are doing this for a school project and cannot accept payment or gifts. This project is a requirement of our eighth grade curriculum.
We at Windsor Middle School feel that students need to become involved participants in their own communities. They need to see that they can be effective contributors to their own lives and those of their fellow citizens. They can and do make a difference. Instead of "What can you do for me?", we are asking them to say, "How can I be of service to my community?"
We hope that you agree with our philosophy and can find the time to share your guidance with one of our students. We feel that your support can make a difference in a student's education and life to help them to mature and become responsible members of our community and society.
I________________________________ (supervising adult) have read this and agree to direct and oversee the activities of the student listed above. The student and I have met and discussed the project. We have agreed that the activities will include:
