Revolutionary
War Newspaper
Create a newspaper about the American
Revolution. You will need to write four types of articles that
detail certain events of the war. You will also need to include
illustrations in order to highlight the articles you write.
Remember that newspaper articles include the "who, what, when, where,
why, and how" information and are written in third person. The
entire paper should include a Name, reasonable date and contain only
accurate, well documented information. The last page (instead of
classified ads) will be a bibliography in MLA format.
Types of articles:
Battle: Write an
article about a significant battle of the American Revolution.
Leader: Write an article
about a significant leader of the American Revolution. This
person could be a Patriot, Loyalist, Tory, military leader,
Englishman, Frenchman, Hessian, or American Indian.
Political: Write an
article explaining the reasons the colonists are creating such a
disturbance. What do they think is so unfair?
Article of Choice: Write an
article of your choice; this could be a human interest story, an
editorial, or an article about the soldiers who are fighting the
war.
Each article should be 2-4 paragraphs in length.
In order to make the newspaper "come alive" you will want to illustrate
it. Illustration can be hand-drawn (as they were during the
American Revolution), from the internet, or reproduced from magazines
or books. Illustration should compliment the article they
accompany.
Type the articles if possible in double column format.
Grade of "C":
Newspaper format in double columns with title
One each of the following articles: battle,
leader, political, article of choice.
Grade of "B"
All components of "C" grade and
Four additional articles to include: editorial,
cartoon, "Man on the Street" interview, food article, or fashion
article.
Grade of "A"
All components of a "B" grade and
Theme to the newspaper. You may wish to
make it a Loyalist paper, a Bostonian paper, a paper for Washington's
army, or from the men under command of the "Swamp Fox". It could
be a newspaper published in France (translated for my convenience into
English) supporting the American Revolution, or it could be published
in Germany to recruit Hessians. It could be a newspaper dedicated
to the naval contributions of either side. It could be a paper
published by the free black community or the American Indian
community. Be sure to document your sources.
